Giants moves: McGehee trade; Romo, Peavy re-signed

The Giants acquired 3B Casey McGehee from Miami for minor-league pitcher Kendry Flores and luis Castillo. Since Flores was already on the 40-man, no further move was needed.

The Giants re-signed RHP Sergio Romo to a two-year contract. The team also re-signed RHP Jake Peavy.

When Romo's announcement became official, the Giants outrighted INF Angel Villalona off the 40-man to clear room. Another move will need to be made when Peavy's signing becomes official.

Giants post-Winter meetings update

No deals or roster changes coming out of the winter meetings. The only free-agent loss thus far is 3B Pablo Sandoval (signed with Boston).

On the minor league front, the team re-signed OF Darren Ford, signed LHP Braulio Lara, RHP Cory Gearrin (released by the Braves), LHP Nik Turley and OF Justin Maxwell.

In the Rule 5 draft, the Giants selected RHP Ramon del Orbe from Miami in the first round, The selected OF Brett Jackson in the second round from Arizona.

OF Cole Gillespie signed a minor league deal with Miami. [UPDATE: a needless bit of info for a former Giant. I was thinking of OF Tyler Colvin].

Giants minor league free agent update

According to Baseball America, here is the minor league free agents signed and lost:

Re-signed
OF Javier Herrera
C Guillermo Quiroz (who was DFA in the off-season)

Signed
LHP Braulio Lara (from Tampa Bay AA)
INF Carlos Triunfel (from LAD AAA)

Lost
LHP Jose DePaula (to NYY)

Giants add 4, remove 1

Ahead of the Rule 5 eligibility lists, the Giants added four players to the 40-man while removing one.

The Giants designated RHP Juan Gutierrez for assignment.

They purchased the contracts of:
RHP Derek Law
RHP Cody Hall
RHP Ray Black
RHP Joan Gregorio

Only Black was still protected by the team. The others could have been snapped up in the Rule 5 draft.

Giants post-season moves through November 3

After the World Series, five Giants declared free agency (and removed from the 40-man roster):
RHP Jake Peavy
RHP Ryan Vogelsong
RHP Sergio Romo
3B Pablo Sandoval
OF Michael Morse

The Giants made a qualifying offer only to Sandoval, which was turned down.

On 11/03, the Giants activated RHP Matt Cain, INF Marco Scutaro, INF Ehire Adrianza and C Hector Sanchez from the 60-day DL. The transaction page also listed C Guillermo Quiroz and RHP Brett Bochy being outrighted to Sacramento. There was no mention that they were designated for assignment at all.

Also, INF Tony Abreu, OF Tyler Colvin and INF Brandon Hicks declared minor league free agency.

Giants off season outlook

The following look is a look at who is signed, who is not and the various status of every player I currently have listed in the organization. I ahve gone through all the rosters through Augusta. As I add in the remaining two levels (Salem-Keizer and AZL Giants), expect nearly all those players to be "under team control."

Under contract past 2014

RHP Matt Cain (through 2017; 2018 option)

RHP Tim Lincecum (through 2015)

OF Hunter Pence (through 2018)

C Buster Posey (through 2021; 2012 option)

RHP Tim Hudson (through 2015)

Angel Pagan (through 2016)

INF Marco Scutaro (through 2015)

LHP Jeremy Affeltd (through 2015)

RHP Santiago Casilla (through 2015; 2016 option)

LHP Javier Lopez (through 2016)

LHP Madison Bumgarner (through 2017; 2018-19 options)

INF Joaquin Arias (through 2015)

OF Daniel Carbonell (through 2017)

Eligible Major League free agents (more than six years service time)

NOTE: Free agency starts the day after the conclusion of the World Series. The Giants have a five-day window of exclusive negotiating rights.

Within those five days, the Giants can extend a "qualifying offer" to the player. The player can accept (and thus be re-signed), or decline (and resume free agency). The player must decide seven days after an offer is made. If the player declines, and signs with another team, the Giants are eligible to receive compensation (in the form of a draft pick).

RHP Jake Peavy (not eligible for qualifying offer because he did not play full season for Giants)

INF Pablo Sandoval

RHP Sergio Romo

OF Michael Morse

RHP Ryan Vogelsong

Arbitration eligible (more than three seasons, less than six)

For players with less than six years experience, the Giants can tender them a contract, or "non-tender" them, thus the player becomes a free agent.

INF Brandon Belt

OF Gregor Blanco

RHP Juan Gutierrez

RHP Yusmeiro Petit

INF Travis Ishikawa

INF Brandon Crawford

Under team control (less than three seasons)

C Guillermo Qurioz

C Hector Sanchez (potential "Super Two" player, who could be arbitration eligible)

Potential minor league free agents

There are multiple ways a minor league player can be eligible for free agency ("six-year" free agent- which really means playing parts of seven eligible seasons in the minors, "XX-D" free agents, meaning the player was optioned in 2014 for at least the second time in his career, or "secondary contract" free agents. I do not break down who is on what list here, but a great explanation can be found here). I do not have knowledge if any of these players have signed a 2015 contract or has some kind of option.
