NFL Week 3- AFC If the Season Ended Today...

Here are the latest playoff rankings, if the season ended today for the AFC (NFC after tomorrow). It is a little easier now that there are more games, meaning the tie-breakers don't have to go so deep. Yet, it is still early for the common games tiebreaker.

1- Buffalo (3-0)
No tiebreaker needed (only AFC undefeated team).

2- Houston (2-1)
Division pct. (1.000, 1-0) over Tennessee (.000, 0-1) for the South; Conference pct. (1.000, 2-0) over Oakland (2-1, .667) and Baltimore (1-1, .500) for #2 seed.

3- Oakland (2-1)
Conference pct. (2-1, .667) over San Diego (1-1, .500) for West; Conference pct. (2-1, .667) over Baltimore (1-1) for #3 seed

4- Baltimore (2-1)
Division pct. (1.000, 1-0) over Cleveland (.000, 0-1) and Pittsburgh (.000, 0-1) for North

5- Tennessee (2-1)
SOV (.500) over New England (.333) and Cleveland (.000); Conference pct. (.667, 2-1, w/New England and Cleveland) over San Diego (.500, 1-1).

6- New England (2-1)
Division pct. (.500, 1-1) over New York (.000, 0-0); SOV (.333) over Cleveland (.000); Conference pct. (.667, 2-1, w/Cleveland) over San Diego (.500, 1-1).

Wishful Thinking- Giants post-season roster options

The power of positive thinking. Here is the playoff-eligible players available for the Giants post-season. All were on the roster (or DL) as of August 31:

PITCHERS
Tim Lincecum
Matt Cain
Ryan Vogelsong
Madison Bumgarner

Steve Edlefsen
Guillermo Mota
Santiago Casilla
Ramon Ramirez
Sergio Romo
Javier Lopez
Jeremy Affeldt*
Brian Wilson

Barry Zito
Jonathan Sanchez (DL)

CATCHERS
Chris Stewart
Eli Whiteside
Buster Posey (DL)

INFIELDERS:
Aubrey Huff

Jeff Keppinger
Orlando Cabrera
Pablo Sandoval
Mike Fontenot
Brandon Belt
Brett Pill
Freddy Sanchez (DL)

OUTFIELDERS
Cody Ross
Andres Torres
Carlos Beltran
Pat Burrell
Nate Schierholtz (DL)

NOTES:
The list breaks down to 14 pitchers (including one on the DL and one not on the DL but done for the season); 3 catchers (including Posey); 8 infielders (including Sanchez); and 5 outfielders (including on eon the DL). That is a total of 30 players, but in reality 26 or 27 "healthy" bodies.

With Affeldt's injury, and assuming he will not be on the post-season roster, the Giants would be allowed to replace him with a man not on the above list (ie Surkamp or Runzler). Same applies to Cody Ross. Schierholtz and Jonathan Sanchez would also be allowed to be replaced (ML Rule 40 (a) (3) ). However, Posey and Freddy Sanchez would not be allowed to be replaced because they are on the 60-day DL (ML Rule 2(g)(2), yet they in theory could be activated themselves to play.

So, the Giants can chose 25 of the above, or select those not on the list to replace the injured (likely 2-3 extra spots).

NFL Week 1 Playoff Match-Ups

If the season ended today...

Although completely theoretical, this is the current playoff rankings if the NFL called it quits after this week. Since it is early in the season, the most common tiebreaker will be strength of schedule (the number six tiebreaker). I computed this information by creating my own NFL matrix on a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

After the first 14 games of the NFL schedule, the NFC seeds are now complete. The road to the Super Bowl goes through San Francisco.

Remember, you have to break the tie within the division first, before comparing it to teams in other divisions.

1- SF (1-0)
[Strength of Schedule (SOS) tiebreaker over Ari (.467 to .375) to win West; SOS (.467) over Was (.438) and Chi (.438) for #1 seed.]

2- Chi (1-0)
[SOS (.438 w/Det) over GB (.375) and Best Combined Conference Ranking in Points Scored and Points Allowed (8/1) over Det (11/5) for North title;  Best Combined Conference Ranking in Points Scored and Points Allowed (8/1) over Was (9/3) for #2seed {tiebreaker #7}]

3- Was (1-0)
[Division (1.00) over Phi (.000)]

4- Car (0-1)
[SOS (.438) over Atl (.400), TB (.375) and NO (.313)]

5- Phi (1-0)
[SOS (.500) over Det (.438) and Ari (.375)]

6- Det (1-0)
[SOS (.438) over GB (.375) to break division tie; SOS (.438) over Ari (.375)]

Matchups:
Wild Card: Det @ Was; Phi @ Car
Division: Det/Phi/Car @ SF; Was/Phi/Car @ SF

Arizona and Green Bay are the odd teams out.

AFC match-ups will be determined after the games Monday night.
